My name is Jesse Houston and I am excited to be joining the Webber team for the 2024-2025 school year. While I grew up in the Midwest, I joined the Navy in 2011 and have had the opportunity to live in many places such as South Carolina, upstate New York, Japan, and Virginia. In 2021 my wife and I decided to settle down in Fort Collins, so we could attend CSU.
My classroom is a space where all students can explore and engage with mathematics concepts in a way that is applicable to their lives. The focus is on understanding concepts, not memorizing procedures or algorithms. I believe that all students can be successful with mathematics in my class. To accomplish these goals we want to form a learning community where all students not only feel supported but work to actively support their peers. Together we can go farther than we can go alone.
The 2024-2025 school year is my first year working in public education. I served in the Navy as a nuclear engineer from 2011-2020, during my last few years I moved into a teaching and mentorship role. After leaving the Navy I attended CSU with a major in mathematics and a minor in Japanese language. While at CSU I was a tutor and teaching assistant for undergraduate math courses, including college algebra and pre-calculus.
Music is my biggest passion. The connections between math, music, and art are something I enjoy working in to my teaching. I also do electrical engineering as a hobby building and modifying musical circuits and effects. My wife and I love to go on walks around Fort Collins and visit museums all over the world.
Teaching has allowed me to share my love of mathematics with so many people. I love to see the a-ha moments for students when they work through the productive struggle. When they start to truly understand the mathematical way of thinking, students become the proactive problem solvers needed in our changing world.
I teach 6th and 8th grade math classes.
