Webber Parents and Student Athletes,
I am sending you this message to get you excited for the upcoming cross country season at Webber. Many of you have run cross country, while others of you I am hoping will join us this fall. Cross country is a no cut sport that is open to all Webber students. We will have a preseason camp from August 13-19. Official practices will begin on August 20. Cross country will get you in amazing shape! Cross country will also help you prepare for other sports (basketball, wrestling, etc). Cross country races are run on grass and trails throughout Fort Collins, and they are 2 miles in length. Everyone gets to race! This fall Webber will be competing in 4 regular season meets (September 5, September 13, September 21, September 26) as well as the District Championship Meet (October 5). There is also a Middle School State Championship meet on October 19 in Denver that some athletes may run in this year as well.
In the meantime, the best thing you can do this summer is start running. Try to run for 20 minutes or more 4-5 days per week. Coach Long will be at Webber on the following Mondays at 7:30 am to run with any interested athletes: June 10, June 17, July 1, July 15, July 22, July 29, and August 5. We will finish by 8:15 am. Meet Mr. Long by the flagpole near the front entrance.
In addition, here are some other opportunities to help you focus on your cross country training. The Mountain Avenue Mile is a one mile race on Mountain Avenue. It is a fun and fast race! Webber runners can register to run on the Webber team for this race. It will be run on Thursday, August 15 at 6:30 pm. The cost is only $5 for those running on the Webber team. Go to mountainmile.com to register. Enter Wave 2 (Competitive boys and girls).
Finally, the Fortitude 10k race has created a program for middle school runners called Fort Dashers. If athletes want to run the Fortitude 10k (which is held on Labor Day), they can do it as part of the Webber team and get a discounted price. See the Fortitude attachment about how to register. Also, click on the training link to see training schedules that they recommend.
I hope everyone is having a good summer so far. If you have friends that did not get this email and are interested in Webber cross country, please pass this information along to them! I hope to see many of you on some of the Monday morning runs or at our preseason camp. Please email me if you have any questions.
